Democracy in Practice | DiP

Project Reference: 2026-1-NL02-KA152-YOU-000397722

Polarisation, fake news and black-and-white thinking make it harder and harder to talk to people who see the world differently. But democracy isn’t only about voting every few years. It’s about listening, disagreeing respectfully and taking part in the decisions that shape our communities.

Democracy in Practice (DiP) is an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange that brings together 48 young people from the EU and neighbouring countries: the Netherlands, Spain, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Türkiye and Jordan.

For a week, we’ll build skills in listening, critical thinking, dialogue and conflict transformation, learn to spot polarisation and disinformation, and visit The Hague and Utrecht. The programme is youth-led: each country team prepares and runs its own workshop, and together we’ll co-create actions to take home.

This youth exchange is for you if:
  • You’re between 18 and 30 years old

  • You want to learn how to take part in democracy and challenge polarisation in your community

  • You don’t need any previous experience. First-timers in international exchanges are especially welcome!

  • You can communicate in English (it doesn’t have to be perfect)

  • You’re ready to take an active part in all sessions and live together with the group (shared rooms, shared tasks)

  • You can join the online preparation meetings and help prepare your country’s workshop

  • You’re willing to share what you’ve learned back home, including at least two local follow-up workshops

Preparation for participants

  • What does democracy mean to you in your daily life, beyond voting?

  • Have you ever seen polarisation or fake news affect your friends, family or community? What happened?

  • When was the last time you changed your mind after talking to someone who thought differently?

  • What would you like to change in your community, and what would you need to make it happen?

  • Dates: 23 November – 1 December 2026 (arrival on the 23rd, departure on the 1st)

  • Place: Katteveld, a group house in the countryside near Utrecht (Netherlands), next to a working farm

  • Participants from Spain: 5 participants + 1 group leader

  • Covered by the project: accommodation, three meals a day and travel costs up to €417 per person. Keep all your tickets and receipts!

  • Travel: we encourage green travel by train or bus. Please check your travel plan with us before booking.

  • Accommodation: shared rooms of about 8 people, divided by gender. Bring your own bedding and towel.
